The proceeds of crime …

Carl Anthony Williams (13 October 1970 – 19 April 2010) was a convicted murderer and drug trafficker from the Australian state of Victoria. He was the central figure in the Melbourne gangland killings.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 35 years for ordering the murders of three people and conspiracy to murder a fourth (which was unsuccessful). On 19 April 2010, while incarcerated at Barwon Prison, Williams was beaten to death with the stem of an exercise bike by another inmate, Matthew Charles Johnson. Wikipedia (19/04/2012)

And today we learn “The family of murdered gangster Carl Williams wants $1 million from the Victorian prison system for pain and suffering caused by his brutal jail death.

At first glance that seems a little grotesque, but the close family could argue that, after all, they didn’t order or carry out the murders. Indeed, they’ve lost a valuable asset given that they were to benefit in exchange for Carl’s testimony in other cases. But nor did the Prison system order or undertake Carl’s murder … look on the bright side, perhaps the close families of those that Carl murdered can now sue the family that were living off Carl’s criminal income. At a million for each successful murder the net loss is two million, cool.
Even better still – if the Prison service are accountable for the actions of Matthew Charles Johnson perhaps the parole board can be held accountable for the actions of the criminals they send back among us.
