LEFT-leading activist group GetUp! has condemned proposed Labor curbs on the media as an assault on freedom of speech.
Incoming GetUp! director Sam Mclean said the group could not support a new super media regulator or a public interest test for media proprietors, currently under consideration by the Gillard government.
His comments follow an attack by Tony Abbott today on the nation’s intellectual left, whom he accused of “selective silence” in the face of Gillard government threats to freedom of speech.
Mr Mclean said the GetUp! position, which has not previously been articulated, was consistent with the group’s opposition to regulation of the internet.
“The proposals that are on the table are not something we would support,” Mr Mclean said.
“We believe in freedom of the press, and the model of regulation that has been put forward seems to us to cut across that important freedom. <The Australian>.
